The Big Four

big4b_mix.jpgYou can find the big four in north Sweden and Lapland. To spot these beasts you have to have a good knowledge where they can be found

It’s not the easiest to spot them without a experienced guide and tracker, even if the four beasts are more and more common in Sweden. Of these predator the most common is bear, lynx, wolverine and finally the wolf

All these four predators are by Swedish low protected. They are also on the international red list of animals under threat of extermination. By EU the bear, lynx and wolf are strictly protected. The wolverine is not on this list because Sweden and Finland joined EU in late 1995, because of that the wolverine have not been a member in EU since before. Hopefully  the wolverine can enjoy the same protection in the near future .....;-)

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has overall responsibility for implementing the Coherent Predator Policy laid down by Parliament in 2001. Many others are involved in this process; for example, responsibility for a number of issues has been delegated to the county administrative boards.

The Coherent Predator Policy is a broad commitment to ensure the long-term survival of large predators in Sweden and to help man and predators to coexist more easily. Predator numbers rose in the 1990s, but this increase has tailed off in recent years, particularly as regards the lynx population.
